The list of the Top Ten Most Popular Cat Breeds according the Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) registration statistics vary each year, but the popularity of some breeds is quite stable.
For example, breeds like the Persian, British Shorthair, Abyssinian, Ragdoll, Russian Blue, American Shorthair, and Maine Coon, are well known breeds which makes them more popular than other breeds.
More than 70 different cat breeds are recognized by cat registries of the largest cat fancier associations. The numbers of recognized cat breeds differ according the standards of the registries from 32 to 74.
Some breeds or varieties are recognized by one organization and not by another.
The IPCBA (International
Progressive Cat Breeders Alliance, located in Upton, KY) for example,
recognizes 74 different cat breeds, while The GCCF (Governing Council of Cat Fanciers, the largest UK registry) recognizes only 32 different cat breeds.
TICA (The International Cat
Association, the second largest in the USA) recognize 58 breeds, while
the Federation International Feline (FIFE) , (Official seat located in Luxembourg) recognizes 43 breeds. This is similar to The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA)
the world's largest registry of purebred cats, located in Manasquan,
NJ, (founded in 1906) which presently recognizes 44 breeds of cats.
